He also served as a captain in the war of 1812. Eliza was named in honor of Eliza Wells, wife of Harvey Wells, founder of Wellston and builder of the furnace.Īmong the early settlers were James Andrews, who came in 1806, and was a justice of the peace for twenty seven years. Being in iron country, Milton was home to most furnaces in the county: Buckeye built in 1851, Cornelia built in 1853, Latrobe built in 1854, Milton built in 1873, Wellston built in 1873, and the Eliza furnace built in 1878. Milton Township is one of the three original townships of Jackson County, Ohio and was one of the earliest settled. ![]()
